So flexible in its playback features.I already had a blu-ray player from Philips but decided that for flexibility I would like one that was able to play more video formats as the 3000 series player was so limited. When I got the unit home and unpacked it I was surprised how small and light the unit was. Very sleek black design that sat nicely under the tv. On switching it on the menu systems is quite straightforward though it does take some time for the network connected items to show as ready, and to be honest more thought could have gone into the icons to show what was going on, waiting for connection, etc. Set up of the wireless is really very easy if your used to computers or trying to get a latest mobile phone to work, again the menu listings are quite basic, no real graphical effort has been made but functional. Once connected it truly comes into its own, effortlessy playing all types of media right off your pc, films, music, etc. So long as the files are in the correct media player folders. The net tv also works well with the one and main exception at the moment and that is the BBC iplayer, it just doesn't work, and after checking online there does seem lots of people have found this, its used to work but has now stopped so has iplayer changed something. For the basic playback of blu-ray, the quality is excellent, colour deep and blacks dark, upscalling is great but you should expect that there day for most devices. I have not tried the 3D as yet so can't comment. But overall a brilliant piece of equipment that nearly does everything I wanted from it. Oh forgot to mention, playback from USB or SD card is also a breeze.

A NEAT, IF NOT PERFECT, UPGRADESaw this model being offered at an attractive price so bought two, primarily to upgrade TV's in both lounge and bedroom with Net/Smart TV.
I was particularly swayed by the built-in wifi, thinking I could run both units wirelessly without cost or complication. This has been only partially successful as it quickly became apparent that the wireless pick-up is considerably reduced compared to, say, my PC. Thus I've been unable to position my router to connect in both rooms at the same time and neither room has a close enough telephone point to hardwire an ethernet connection.
Whether the wifi is simply not that good, or it's purposely restricted to ensure consistent streaming, I don't know - certainly I've been impressed so far with the quality and consistency of streaming on i-Player once a connection has been established. As I'm about to change my broadband provider anyway, I'll wait and see if their hub gives a better output. Otherwise I guess it'll have to be a 'wall plug' type adapter to serve one of the units via ethernet and the domestic mains.
Although I've had HD ready TV's for a while, I've not got into Blu-ray yet #let alone 3D# so how impressed I'll be compared to upscaled DVD has yet to be tested. Frankly, to my eyes, DVD's are so good with the picture processing of my Pixel Plus equipped Philips TV, I wonder if it will really be much of an improvement.
Likewise, I'm not one for streaming pictures, video etc from PC or USB. Maybe I'll get up to speed with this as time goes on but, in the meantime, anybody buying for these facilities, which are part and parcel of the BDP5200 repertoire, will need to get a rating from somebody experienced in that art!
Initial set up was simple enough although one of the units had the earliest firmware version and, as has been widely reported, would not operate BBC i-Player until I had downloaded the upgrade. To me, it was a pity that the upgrade sacrifices the i-Player icon on the home page so an extra step to the Net TV page is required to access what must be one of the more frequently used facilities.
I have mixed feelings about some of the other Net TV 'apps'. It's nice to be able to browse the web on your TV screen but don't get carried away - navigation without a mouse can be tortuous. Other apps like TV5Monde are included in the UK gallery but I've yet to get this to function beyond the guide pages!
Some of the remote control buttons #or the response of the unit?# can be a bit hit and miss - first press doesn't work so press again and all of a sudden it's jumped two steps and you have to 'reverse back' to where you wanted to be.....
Added to which on my smaller bedroom TV, despite also being Philips, I cannot select an aspect ratio or vertical position on HDMI that allows me to see the designated functions of the colour buttons at the bottom of various Net TV screens. Combined with the lack of info in the user manual #which says follow the onscreen instructions!# and the quirky remote, this has led to quite a lot of frustrating experimentation and learning by mistakes.
As with most current electronic devices, the BDP5200 is pretty lightweight but build quality seems up to Philips' normal good standards. I personally like the clean, uncluttered styling and the unit is usefully slim and compact.
So all in all, whilst there are some annoying flaws and glitches, once you've mastered these, or just plain got used to them, you are rewarded with a sound and flexible proposition for not that much money. Whether the less patient amongst us will see it that way is another matter!
